About Us

Set above the busy market town of Quissac in the Languedoc region in the South of France, La Deveze captured our hearts from the second we set eyes on it. Over the past five years, we have worked to restore what was little more than a sprawling collection of 18th century buildings into an idyllic retreat, and a unique base for guests to visit to explore this unspoiled region. The refurbishment was completed using authentic artisan methods – stone by stone, beam by beam, and today La Deveze provides luxurious boutique accommodation, nestled in the heart of some of the most spectacular scenery of the south of France. The expansive swimming pool (96m²) is set into the hillside above the houses, enjoying views in all directions across the rolling hillside. A large flagstone terrace and shade-speckled decking surround the pool, bedecked with sunbeds and covered areas offering respite from the midday sun. Watching the tangerine sunset across the distant Cevennes mountains never fails to unveil the magic of La Deveze. Check out the well-stocked honesty bar – lounging by the pool with a glass of local wine, we know you’ll fall in love with La Deveze just as we did. We look forward to welcoming you.

Accommodation and Setting

The Grounds

La Deveze’s ninety acres of grounds hold so much to discover. In search of a quiet spot to read? Take a blanket to aptly named The View atop the hillside, or cool down in a thyme-scented patch under the trees or next to a natural swimming pond. Early risers will be treated to the morning song of an array of birds and occasionally the sight of families of deer grazing in the meadow. Afternoon brings the sound of cicadas and the distant buzz of the bees from our hives searching for nectar. Fresh eggs and vegetables are available to buy from our ‘potager’, or if you enjoy foraging for wild herbs, truffles and vegetables, this is a land of plenty. 2019 sees Caroline and Andrew’s first attempt to produce their own wine from the small vineyard.

The Accommodation

The four separate houses cater for any requirement; all the comforts of home among the wild wonders of the south of France. Within your accommodation you will find 200 thread count cotton bedding and sumptuous White Company towels. Separate towels are provided for the pool area. Each kitchen is equipped to a very high standard with enough crockery and glassware to allow you cater for any special occasion. Locally-sourced antiques are dotted throughout, with freestanding baths in the main bedrooms – the perfect spot to relax after a long hike. Both larger houses have ground floor bedrooms for those less able to use the stairs. The outside areas have ample seating for al-fresco dining and relaxing, as well as covered areas where you can escape the hot midday sun.

Early evenings treat you to the sight of buzzards drifting in the warm air currents, searching for prey over the Coutach mountain. As the night draws in, the cicadas subside and the sound of scops owls can be heard. The famously clear skies of the Languedoc treat us to an enviable view of the solar system; spend an evening spotting shooting stars in the courtyard. Life-affirming moments among nature and a wonderful nights’ sleep, all only 1 km from town.
